It would seem that a surprising amount of people in the United Kingdom aren’t completely sure how car leasing works, so to give you a helping hand deciding if car leasing is for you, here’s a brief overview of the basics.
In general terms, leasing refers to a method of paying for an using a car for a certain period of time without owning or paying the full price of the vehicle. Fifteen years ago, chances are that no one in the UK would have known of the small Japanese car marque, Subaru. Those that knew of of these far-eastern autos viewed them primarily as farming vehicles that farmering communities would use to ferry their crops and sheep dogs from A to B when the trusty Range Rover was to wide for the twisty country lanes, they were a less attractive option than van contract hire. Of course now the Subaru name is well know in Britain, and has even earned the affection moniker, ‘Scooby’, mainly for its iconic now Impreza model, a popular choice for customers looking into car leasing. With car contract hire, the risk is assumed by the car leasing company, who will charge you a fixed rate for the duration of the contract, despite the condition of the vehicle or what it may be worth at the end of the term. When the residual value of a car is hit hard (often referred to as depreciation), it is not the consumer who takes the loss, instead hitting the finance company.
The risk for a company increases when they decide to purchase their vehicles outright and have an overdraft with their bank instead of a leasing agreement. (more…)

It is pretty much standard practice for car leasing organisations to change the cars in their range every 3 years; something that is common with a contract hire vehicle.. Some will try to hire the vehicle for a shorter term, where other companies may try to purchase the vehicle they have been hiring.
