Why Selling Used Cars To Friends Is A Bad Idea
Friday, September 10th, 2010Just a couple of months back, my neighbour who I was on great terms with, bought my old car. This wasn’t my idea but the man in question approached me when he saw that I’d bought a new car; he wanted to know what I was going to do with the old car. Not only was he my neighbour but I would have also considered him a friend because we used to chat down the local pub and our wives were very friendly with each other too. So it seemed like a great idea when he asked if he could buy my old car. Even though he offered a lower price than I originally wanted for the car, I thought it was still a good idea because I wouldn’t have the hassle of trying to sell it. We shook hands and that is when the problems began.
On the evening that this neighbour had bought the car we had a long phone call with him asking all types of odd questions. So it was then that I knew I had made a major mistake selling my car to my neighbour. It was as if he thought I had done him out of money with some of the questions he was asking me. Our phone call ended with him slamming down the phone because I had told him in no uncertain terms that I would refund his money if he brought back the car. I am not a car salesman and have never sold a car before but I really thought that once you had sold the car, that was it.
Another friend of mine approached me and warned that this neighbour was spreading nasty rumours about me. He was accusing me of cheating him by selling him a pile of junk for quite a lot of money. I tackled the neighbour about it but he denied the whole thing. Since then we have not spoken to each other at all and my poor wife is being ignored by his wife. So take my advice - do not sell a used car to anyone who you consider to be a friend.
